There’s a new buzzword in town – glycation – and it’s not very welcome…
Glycation is a process where sugar molecules in the bloodstream attach to proteins, like collagen and elastin. This forms advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which cause cross linking in your skin – resulting in a degradation of collagen and elastin, with tissues that stiffen and become less flexible.
This results in the appearance of more wrinkles!
The presence of AGEs also makes the skin more vulnerable to damage from UV light, as well as cigarette smoke and pollution in the environment.
Interestingly, most of the information about glycation comes from diabetes research.
Typical signs of glycation in the skin, or ‘sugar face’ are:
- Lines and wrinkles on the upper forehead
- Sagging under eyes
- Spots
- Thinning of the skin
- A grey or pasty white or yellowish hue to the skin
While glycation and the process of developing AGEs is a natural part of aging, too many AGEs in the body will have a detrimental effect. AGEs can also form in food, which go on to damage your body and skin when you eat them, if consumed regularly or excessively.
Foods that are fried, roasted, grilled or braaied (exposed to high temperatures) tend to be higher in these compounds. Animal foods high in fat and protein are more susceptible to AGE formation during the cooking process.
Drinking green tea regularly is said to interfere with the glycation process, protecting the skin. Of course, maintaining a healthy balanced diet with reduced sugar and few high GI carbohydrates is one of the best choices you can make.
Another solution is a DMK product we stock called AminoDine spritz. This refreshing spray is packed with antioxidants and cucumber oil, specially designed to revise an excess of weakened and fragile capillary vessels, as well as hydrating the skin. Used on the face, neck, back and hands at night, this amazing product is perfect for sun damaged and mature skin and is also highly recommended for diabetics and smokers.
