PRP Therapy – All About the Vampire Facial

The Vampire Facial, or PRP therapy, is a natural and chemical-free process that REALLY works!

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is the result of spinning a vial of the clients’ blood in a centrifuge machine, which separates the red blood cells from the plasma, platelets, and white blood cells. This plasma is extracted and used either by small mesotherapy injections in specific areas where concerns are visible, or as a serum in a microneedling treatment for overall treatment of the skin of the face, neck, and décolletage. Mesotherapy and microneedling of PRP are generally combined for best results.

PRP can only be performed with assistance from a medical professional, therefore Professional Skin Care Lab collaborates with Dr Judey Pretorius of Biomedical Emporium, Dr Nadine Haberfeld and registered nurse Bridget Spargo from Balanced Healing, who assist Gina and Elmarie during the treatments on scheduled treatment days, by appointment only.

So why go to all the trouble, you ask?

Platelets are a vital part of wound healing, releasing growth factors (proteins) when activated at a wound site within the body. This stimulates the surrounding fibroblasts to produce new structural cells, like collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. When the PRP is injected into the face or area of treatment via tiny pricks, it stimulates blood flow and nutrients to the area, allowing the skin tissue to function and look its best.

Growth factors are large proteins that are manufactured by all types of cells – in the skin, they feature in the outermost epidermal layer as well as the deeper dermis. Their function is to bind to the receptors on cell surfaces, stimulating the biochemical pathways that promote skin tissue repair and regeneration. This activation causes the cells to divide, make more collagen and elastin, or increase the blood flow.

Normal blood only contains 6% platelets, but when spun in the centrifuge, the platelets are concentrated in the plasma, to a concentration of 94% – a powerful growth factor cocktail!

In addition to microneedling, the PRP can be injected into the neck, decollate and the back of the hands. What you can expect in just a few weeks is improved skin tone, hydration, and glow, with reduced superficial acne scars and pigmentation. Youthful, bright, healthy, radiant – pick your adjective – they all apply.

Recovery time is a few days, and risks and complications are low. We recommend 2 – 6 treatments, depending on the area, with each treatment taking around 60-90 minutes.
