Tixel: An Exciting New Treatment for Skin Rejuvenation

There is constant innovation in the field of skincare, with Tixel being one of the latest. Thermo-mechanical ablative treatment, or in other words, tiny points of super-heat delivered to the skin without burning it, is a revolutionary way to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars, pigmentation, and acne.

An energy-based method, Tixel technology does not use lasers, intense light, or radio frequency – no radiation, no fumes, no smoke, no bleeding.

The Tixel device has a titanium heated tip that contains tiny pyramids which heat up to 400˚C. It has a piston-like movement (up and down) where it presses on the skin for milliseconds but does not penetrate it. The thermal energy is transferred to the upper layers of the skin, creating tiny holes or pores. This is what stimulates collagen production, which brings about skin tightening.

The device can be used on the face, neck, hands, decolletage and even on the eyes.

Current research and case studies have shown that Tixel technology used on the eye lids –about ten applications on each lid – has the effect of a non-surgical eye lift and relieves the symptoms of Dry Eye Disease. And did we mention the reduced appearance of wrinkles?

Typically, Tixel therapy can vary from three to six treatments, with gaps of between two and four weeks between treatments, depending on which area is being treated. It takes between 15 and 20 minutes, and while most people find the associated pain tolerable, an anaesthetic cream can be applied before treatment.

Ablative vs non-Ablative

This refers to the length of the contact time of the device with the skin. In the ablative mode, this would be 12 milliseconds or more, when the goal is skin tightening and scar treatment. The skin may develop thin crusting post-treatment that could take up to a week to clear. The non-ablative treatment uses contact time of 8 – 10 milliseconds, which will give the same effects as the ablative treatment but would require more procedures. The upside is there is very little recovery time needed.

The micro-channels that are created in the skin facilitate the enhanced penetration of topical products, like serums.
